Living by the motto “Share love always; Education is the key to success”, Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin lovingly called “Cutie”, has been a long standing faithful,committed and dedicated servant to the people of the St John’s City South Constituency. First elected as Parliamentary Representative for the constituency in 1994, Cutie has won six consecutive elections and is poised to win for a seventh time when the General Elections is next held.
At the national level, Attorney General Benjamin has modernised the Legal System of Antigua and Barbuda. He oversaw the establishment of the First Model Sexual Offences Court, the First Model Family Court and the First Model Civil Registry in the OECS.. In addition, under his guidance, Antigua and Barbuda became the first country in the OECS to establish a Criminal Prosecution Services Department headed by the Director of Public Prosecutions who is responsible for all criminal prosecutions in the State.
Most importantly, he was instrumental in June 2022 in obtaining the Privy Council’s Judgment settling the 300 hundred years old land dispute question involving the ownership of Lands in Barbuda. Further, he played a major role in negotiating the establishment of the Fourth Landed Campus of the University of the West Indies at Five Islands.
In his constituency, this astute Politician has been sponsoring community Basketball Teams in all Divisions of the Antigua and Barbuda Basketball Association’s League to include Cutie’s Ovals O’jays and Cutie’s Ovals All Stars; this he has done since 1984. His sponsorship extends to many other community activities to include programmes for the Elderly, the Young and underprivileged in his community. Cutie was integrally involved in the renovation of the Ovals Basketball Court and has provided and still provides opportunities for employment for his constituents.
Cutie has plans for the constituency which includes improving housing and proper infrastructure in the Belmont area, providing more jobs for residents and developing the Belmont Sporting Complex with surrounding residences constructed for his constituents.
Attorney General Benjamin is a highly qualified individual who studied in Barbados at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies, in the USA and in England. In 1974 he was selected Student of the Year of the Cave Hill Campus.. He taught Law for many years at the Antigua State College. As far as Education is concerned, Cutie has offered scholarships to many of his constituents and has assisted in their overall development by providing mentoring and professional guidance counseling.
This enterprising politician is also the Minister of Labour and Public Safety. During his formative years, he worked as an Air Traffic Control Assistant, Labour Commissioner and Hearing Officer.He contributed to the drafting of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Code in 1974.
Attorney General Benjamin is the proud father of 9 grown children. He is a practicing Anglican and lives by the Bible Verse: “Let not your heart be troubled.”
In his spare time, he enjoys reading,doing academic research, judging debates, doing radio commentaries and making critical analysis of calypsos at calypso events and competitions and engaging in community development projects.
